Drywall, 2023
Part of an ongoing series of installations, these works explore the material potentials of gypsum in different forms. As a typical new Canadian home contains more than 7 metric tons of gypsum, we are constantly surrounded by this material, and yet, few of us ever think objectively or creatively about this substance we take for granted. Its abundance and malleability lend itself to sculptural expressions as it can be made soluble in water and then cast into any shape, a quality that also allows it to be made into drywall panels. In these two iterations of the project, one room was built from drywall and plaster, where the paper was slowly removed from the surface of the drywall and the floor made of cast plaster of Paris. Drywall and plaster dust was circulated through the ventilation system to create a haze of gypsum dust, reminiscent of the gypsum sand dunes of New Mexico. The other is a wall made of drywall where the paper was removed entirely, exposing the fragile and brittle gypsum plaster beneath, along with the drywall screws.
